QUARRY RECLAMATION
WHERE
Stony Creek Quarry Branford, Connecticut USA
WHEN
Spring 2025
WHAT
District 2: The Quarry Arts
Concept Statement:
The Quarry Arts envisions a dynamic environment where material extraction,
fabrication, education, and cultural production are spatially and programmatically
integrated. By uniting industrial processes with public engagement and creative
practice, the district fosters a holistic model of place-making that links geology,
craftsmanship, and community within a shared landscape.
Solutions:
To inform the design of the linear processing facility, case studies of variously
sized stone fabrication sites were analyzed to understand spatial requirements
and optimize layout strategies responsive to the site context. The project site’s
adjacency to two primary quarry roads, Quarry Art Way for industrial access and
Quarry Road for visitors, guides the facility’s spatial organization. Accordingly,
the processing facility is divided into two distinct zones: one dedicated to heavy
machine work and the other to educational, hands-on workshops. This separation
supports both efficient production and public engagement while maintaining visual
and thematic connections through carefully framed views, shared courtyards,
and transitional thresholds. Environmental challenges such as dust mitigation
are addressed through a centralized water tank system that supplies the facility’s
wet shop. Sediments are effectively filtered, and water is recycled, ensuring
sustainable resource use and improving air quality. This integrated approach
balances functional demands, environmental stewardship, and experiential quality
within the linear framework of the Quarry Arts district.
