ADU Unit
Shelving units tend to be very structured, yet they allow for air flow and light to enter the space. What if there is a way to create shelving that is more fluid in use? What if through the movement of the shelving, different scenarios can be created with the spacial quality to create different forms of usage.
What is a home? Is a home simply a physical boundary, or is it so much more? A home is not simply four walls that encompass your living needs, but rather an entity that grows and travels with you. It is not the physicality of space, but rather an idea that travels through time and brings you back to your fondest memories. It’s an idea that pushes you to continue to grow and develop alongside it, to transform into your best entity. It’s bits and pieces that you collect over time that bring you a sense of joy no matter where you go. You may grow up in one place, be born and raised, but then move to a whole new country. Experience so many new adventures that you might feel like you have your whole life split into two. You start to bonder where you truly belong. Over time, you start to feel like a stranger in one compared to the other. Your memory starts to fade, people change, and when you travel back you feel like it is no longer the place that you once used to know. That is the reality of it all, time can be cruel and won’t wait for your return. The physical space will always transform to fit the needs of that specific time, whether you are present or not.
However, home is what you make of it. What you decide to bring along with you through the journey of time. Home can be a person, it can be your comfort animal, it can be a vessel in which you decide what to keep. Home is ever evolving to fit your lifestyle, even as you grow older, and your memories start to fade. Home should be ever adaptive to your needs, to spark joy, and form curiosity. An entity that evolves with you over space and time. Home should have a sense of fluidity, as much as you form your home, home can also form you in a sense that reflects what surrounds you. The physical boundaries will be in turn a reflection of your inner self and thoughts as you transform and evolve. A place needs to be able to evolve with one self in order for it to truly be a home.
With that in mind, the design of this ADU unit evolves along side the users. First, the shelving units serve as a place to collect physical memories. However, they not only collect physical memories, but they store stories within them. The shelving units are centered in the middle of the unit and have the ability to move in the vertical plan to create different moments of usage. One of the shelving units are completely extended upwards, they serve as space of rest and leave enough space underneath for the people to use as an office space. The second setting for the shelving units allows for a platform to be created to for performances to take place (one of my personal fondest memories would be whenever my family would come over to our house and ask the kids to preform a certain show to entertain the adults). The third setting for the unit allows for the shelving to serve as a table for dinning. The fourth, sunken form of the unit allows for a bit to be created for a cozy collaborative space.
